The Dress

You can truly wear a dress to almost any event. Sheath dresses are timeless and reliable. Remember to steer clear of of ones too short and too tight! Save that for the club, not the “meet the parents” moment. For fall, we favor a sweater dress or a shirtdress with tights. Determine whether or not the affair is normally casual or more formal to decipher between heels, wedges, flats, or flat boots.

The Skirt

Much like a dress, a skirt can say formal, but not over-the-top. With so many pencil varieties and mid-length skirts, it’s easy to find a look that showcases the best you. Again, avoid the mini! Mini skirts scream wild, party girl.

The Pants

If you’re more casual, there are certainly plenty of pants options. We recommend avoiding jeans, unless they are a darker wash. Basic black never fails, but dress pants come in all colors now from camel to red to tweed. Nonetheless, dress your pants up with a blazer, a nice sweater, or a pretty blouse. Remember, we all tend to overeat on this holiday, so make sure your ensemble leaves enough room to be forgiving.

The Accessories

Having one or two gorgeous accessories can transform an outfit (like the J.Crew purses or pumps above), plus offer a conversation starter! A necklace or a structured bag can absolutely pull an outfit together. Word of caution: don’t overdo it! This is not the time to be super trendy; let your personality be the focal point, but of course, don’t be afraid of a stylish accessory being a conversation starter.

A key thing to remember: When you feel good about yourself, it shows.

Sophie Theallet:

The muse for this stunning collection was the aura of a woman who is stylish but is also perhaps a little bit ill-behaved.   The opening look of a skinny pencil skirt paired with an open satin blouse, was perfectly reminiscent of the good girl gone a little bad, and a tinge of the sexiness of Tom Ford’s Gucci days,  However, there was still a sweetness about each look that lended itself with Sophie Theallet’s typical bohemian silhouettes and aesthetic.

Fenton:

Fenton’s F/W 20ll Collection was entitled “Versailles at Midnight” and was rightfully inspired by none other than Louis XIV.  Each piece of jewelry referenced the opulent age and polished interiors with a contemporary and hand-crafted feel.  Different sections of the show called to mind different times of day which was an innovative way of organizing the viewing of the collection.  For example, an early morning hour was represented by a piece in acid green jade with a thoroughly 1980’s touch.  With Fenton, everything is handmade and custom, which you could easily see through this collection’s pieces.

It’s really impossible to say when enough black items in your wardrobe is enough. They’re just so practical, and usually you’ll get your money’s worth, merely from the opportunities on practically a daily basis that you can have to wear them! I simply love, and immediately bought this Origami Skirt with Exposed Zipper, $22.80, for its bondage-like design and contemporary exposed zipper. I can’t say that it’s work-appropriate since the skirt is pretty clingy, but is a definite knock-out to wear in the evening or on the weekends –pair it with some statement jewelry such as a bib necklace or oversized earrings, and off you go!
