I was so excited to go to the advanced screening of The Other Woman, starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann, Kate Upton, Nikolaj Coster-Waldu (“Game of Thrones” fans get excited!) and even Nicki Minaj! The movies hits theaters nationwide next week (April 25th), and in the meanwhile,without giving away too many spoiler alerts, I’d love to share a bit about it, as well as the fact that I got to meet the incredibly talented stylist Patricia (Pat) Field (of “Sex and the City” fame) with an intimate q&a session afterward. Pat explained that her main job is to tell a story through clothing, while also making sure that the actresses/actors feel comfortable in what they are wearing. She doesn’t worry about using particular brands or starting trends at all; for her, it just has to fit the character. “She was a Charlotte- like genre,” Pat explained, of Leslie Mann’s character, Kate, who very much had some Charlotte-like traits and lifestyle in the film. At one point, Cameron Diaz’s character Carly wears a flowing pale yellow dress, which Pat describes as looking like “a bumble bee;” – I love it!
Completely fascinating to me was to hear the process of selecting the pieces, while Pat admitted how much she loves working with comedic actresses, and how there is always something that she can learn from them. It’s extremely important to relay how clothing manifests the characters in a movie, and we see the contrast and its value throughout the film’s three main protagonists of Carly (Cameron Diaz), Kate (Leslie Mann), and Amber (Kate Upton).
Carly, who is a lawyer, wears more structured pieces in a neutral palette, but always looks incredibly sophisticated and chic. I see her in brands mostly like Norma Kamali, Helmut Lang, and Theyskens Theory. Kate on the other hand, is a housewife with the aforementioned Charlotte tendencies, wears items that are largely reminiscent of Kate Spade, Lilly Pulitzer, Talbots, Athleta, and Ted Baker. Amber, the youngest of the three, embodies more of a youthful, casual, free spirit in her look, reminding me of DKNY, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, and T by Alexander Wang. At different points in the film, both Carly and Kate wear vibrant red dresses (my two favorite looks from the movie!), that, although the shade may be the same, the silhouettes and fabrications fully represent the characters at that moment in time.
Revealing a bit more about the film itself, it is an absolutely hilarious comedy with whip smart quips that lead to some pretty funny outcomes, spawned out of an unlikely friendship, that you find yourself rooting for throughout the movie. See the trailer above for a sneak peek, which gracefully turns the idea of “the other woman” on its head, and instead, revealing a light but touching film about the value of friendship and camaraderie, perfect for a girls night out! In fact, it was a total girls night out for me, as my lovely friend Lily was my +1 guest, filling our bellies up with champagne, candy, popcorn, and a late night dinner afterward!
