NYFW FALL 2013: The Best of Backstage Beauty — Makeup

by Julia DiNardo

mac face chart 2013[All images by Julia DiNardo]

Think pretty, mainly natural makeup for fall 2013, and either focus on an amazing ip, or totally neglect it, and you will be on trend! See below for some of our favorite backstage makeup looks.

clover canyon kevyn aucoin fall 2013

Soooo gorgeous, right? At Clover Canyon, lead makeup artist Deanna Melluso for Kevyn Aucoin created a “Russian ballerina ice princess” aesthetic that aws just utterly gorgeous. She started off with the brand’s Sensual Skin Tinted Balm coupled with Celestial Powder in Candlelight to give the cheekbones a slightly ethereal glow. The lips were kept pretty bare and matte, while the eyes got the royal treatment of Snow eyeshadow all over the lid and in the tearducts, finishing off with curling the lashes and Volume & Curling Mascara just to the top lashes — stunning!

NYFW FALL 2013: The Best of Backstage Beauty — Hair

by Julia DiNardo

dVF fall 2013[Backstage at DVF; all images via Julia DiNardo]

Curious to know what we saw and loved backstage for the fall 2013, destined to be big for fall 2013? Read on for our favorite hair styles of the season!

rodney cutler ulta tadashi

Rodney Cutler for THE SALON at ULTA, alongside ULTA Beauty stylists, went with a younger aesthetic for Tadashi‘s fall 2013 gorgeous evening wear, working with dry textures as well as some hair braiding away to the side underneath to keep the look a little less ‘put together’ and recalling a concept of ‘distressed glamour.’  He used one of my favorite products, the Redken Power Grip 03 to tease the roots and get great volume.

NYFW FALL 2013: Through the Editor’s Lens, Part III

by Julia DiNardo

mercedes-benz fashion week[Inside of the tents there was a photo opportunity with these fabulous, and literal, "fashion plates"!]

Part III here we go! As I share my show, backstage, and lounge access, I’m still astonished by all that I did and saw in a week’s time!
look inside my land_s end bagMy Land’s End tote bag (pictured above) is overflowing with my fashion week musts, ranging from the essential Rosebud Lip Salve to multiple charger (with my Boostcase Hybrid, which kept my phone alive), my Intel ThinkPad, Lumix camera, sunnies, a bevy of backstage passes and crednitals, winter hat, notebook, snacks, and more!

in the photographer_s pit

Do you find it glamorous to be a fashion week photographer? If so, here’s a look at the ‘pit,’ where they have to squat in a tiny space for the duration of the show. Still interested in being one? Let’s hope you’re not claustrophobic!

backstage glow

The glow of the blue lights backstage, seconds before the light comes on, the music blasts, and the first model walks out.

seat at fashion week

For a show that is supposed to “start” at 3pm, here’s the view from my perch at 3:15; as you can tell, most people are “fashionably late!”.

tracy reese

The Tracy Reese fall 2013 collection is based on a New York City girl, so naturally, the set includes a traffic light and ‘cement’ flooring. As the engineers put the last of the tiles into place on the runway, the ‘house’ is anxiously waiting to open. Completion time: 1:55pm; Showtime: 2pm– welcome to the world of fashion shows!

clover canyon shoes

Shoes backstage at Clover Canyon — aren’t these just incredible? Made specifically for the show, these dazzling pumps were made by hand, by embellishing a pair of J.Crew heels — how splendid! Inspired by the Russian Ballet, there were even bedazzled ballerina shoes, that some models were displaying, on pointe!

spanx bodysuit spanx swimwear

I stopped by the Spanx suite duringf fashion week to check out their newest products, with favorite pieces including the pictured ultra-sexy black bodywear piece that has versatile strap options, and the swimsuit with an intrinsic knot design. Also on display were other categories including legwear, active wear, and even Spanx for men!

tresemme minkoff & packham tresemme wall of new products

Kicking it at a breakfast and then a show (Michael Kors!!!) with my buds from TRESemmé, I learned about the latest products added to their armada of awesomeness and affordibility, including the Keratin Infusing Hair Serum along with Keratin Heat Protection Shine Spray, Shampoo, and Conditioner, Platinum Strength products to repair damage and replenish strands, and my personal favorite — the reformulated Fresh Start Dry Shampoo, which I use on a pretty steady basis of every other day. Jeanie Syfu, TRESemmé stylist, also presented two hair looks she created this season, the graceful ribbon hair tie look at Jenny Packham, and the ultra straight, blunt ‘do for Rebecca Minkoff (pictured above).

orlando pita backstage carolina herrera

A very realistic view from the backstage, with master stylist Orlando Pita!  Snapped backstage at Carolina Herrera, we have a model on a phone, Pita cracking a smile as he explains the steps, and an assistant aiding in the process.

wigs at betsey johnson

Wigs!! Spotted backstage at Betsey Johnson! Rodney Cutler created the look, that involved securing the wig to a ponytail with an elastic, and basically just having fun with the movement and  zany assorted colors.

backstage at helmut lang backstage at helmut lang

Backstage at Helmut Lang, I got the look lowdown from Hannah Murray of NARS Cosmetics, who created a creamy complexion look based on amazing skin, with either stark, or muted eyebrows for the models. Essie created a matte, natural nail, while Paul Hanlon did 90′s mussed up sexy hair. I also love peeking at the clothes on the racks backstage; it’s truly a wonder how they come to life, and look completely different, on a body!

eyewear at fashion week i drink A LOT of vita cocoToward the end of the week, I need to give my eyes a break, so my new cat eye frames from LensCrafters did the trick, while I stayed hydrated and full of Vitamin C with the ultra-delish Vita Coco! I know some people are obsessed with the different coco flavors, but I am strictly an original-formula girl.

NYFW FALL 2013: Through the Editors Lens, Part II

by Julia DiNardo

a view from mbfashionweek

[The view of main sponsor/waiting area from Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, from the top of the TRESemmé booth]

I started the feature “NYFW FALL 2013: Through the Editor’s Lens” so that you could come with as I move through fashion week, experiencing what I do visually. Now complete is Part II, and shortly, Part III (the final installment) for the season, which shares my fashion week adventures. Part II  focuses on the cool tech gadgets, combined of course, with cutting edge style, that came in to play throughout the week.

emergency kit

I got sent this fashion week survival kit, which actually came in handy quite often, featuring a sparkly Clava makeup bag, Altoids mints, an Eyebobs eyeglass cloth, more!

an array of COVERGIRL products

covergirl mani cam COVERGIRL nail gloss

At the Style Coalition Influencer Lounge, for the Grammy’s Party, I got “grammy glam”!  I received a gorgeous retro hairstyle via Herbal Essences and my homegirl Natasha Leibel, and an impeccable manicure using the new nail polish line COVERGIRL OutLast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss in Constant Caribbean.  All decked out, I then took a little ‘twirl’ on the red carpet for the “manicam”!

with jenny from nars

Later that night, I popped over to hang with my friends from NARS Cosmetics at their Grammy-viewing party. I snapped the above pic with Jenny Smith, national makeup artist for the brand, who I adore everything about — look at her cool collar necklaces!

The Fashion Pulse Daily Team’s Favorite Trends for Fall 2013

by Julia DiNardo

[Alexander Wang for Fall 2013; Image via WWD.com]

Want to know the favorite trends straight from the FPD fashion week team! Here you go!

The Trend: Fur Accessories

Fur isn’t just for coats anymore; designers are infusing new life into this fall/winter staple by crafting more pieces in their collections with sumptuous furs. Oversized fur mittens kept cropping up in shows from Alexander Wang, Altuzarra and Katie Ermilio. Furry leg warmers also made an appearance in bright shades of purple and yellow at Jeremy Scott. Even fashion blogger Bryan Boy in collaboration with Adrienne Landau, showed fur some love with his debut accessories collection that featured colorful fur bow ties and camera straps. While some people may not want to have an entire fox wrapped around their necks like the ones seen at Marc Jacobs, these other pieces offer fun new ways to look good while staying warm. Now that’s fashion with function.

The Trend: Mixed Material Sleeves

This isn’t brand-spanking new to the style scene, as arm coat-style bodices and khaki trenches have been getting leather sleeves attached to them as of late, but there is definitely a heightened interest in the trend and the variety of sleeve options have expanded for fall to include fur, tweed, bedazzlement, and more eye-catching options.  The key to this look relies on the contrast; soft mixed with hard, satiny smooth mixed with nubby, woven combined with…furry. Favorites included those seen at Carolina Herrera, BCBG MAX AZRIA, and Rebecca Minkoff. If your adept at the sewing machine, you could try a little DIY action and Frankenstein a few garments, or try the simplest version of this: layer a vest over top!

The Trend: Asymmetrical Silhouettes

With asymmetry back on the runways in full force this season, this unbalanced look will be a bold statement, come fall. What is great about this trend is that it can be toyed with for either a casual or more more formal style, depending on the styling, as both Tia Cibani and Diego Binetti exemplified this season.
