The designer for NOMIA, Yara Flinn, pulled her inspiration for her Fall/Winter 2012 collection from Dan Flavin, a minimalist artist famous for his installations of florescent and neon light. Yara’s inspiration can bee seen in the juxtaposition of neutrals in navy, olive, and black against the vibrant neon tones of cobalt and fuchsia; this pairing allowed for the colors to truly pop. The collection featured streamlined silhouettes embellished with structured seaming and simple yet unusual draping. Flinn’s primary use of neutral tones gave her the ability to incorporate thigh high slits and mesh details without compromising the collection. Flinn’s modern interpretation of color-blocking produced a collection that is fun, youthful and wearable.

Step inside Shangri-la, the mystical Himalayan utopia of James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon with Vivienne Tam’s Fall/Winter 2012 collection. Appropriately called the “Shangri-la Remix”, Tam’s collection incorporates striking Himalayan textiles, sleek tailoring, and dynamic jacquard prints. The collection, which relied heavily on layering, played with vibrant jewel tones and rich fabrics. The fusion between ethnic and modern worked together creating beautiful pieces such as the emerald green leather pencil skirt which was paired with a calico diamond draped top in blue tones and finished with a stunning oval jacquard teal coat with a Mongolian fur collar in rust. The collection generously incorporated bold outerwear which pulled together each look and complimented the sleek silhouettes beneath. Tam’s collection is a dream for any woman with an infatuation for menswear inspired pieces with their own unique flare.

The Jill Stuart Fall 2012 collection was feminine with a touch of vampire-esque sexiness. Contrasting ivory and black prints paired together playfully, only to be spiced up with patent leather platform clogs and a smoky eye. A flirty black dress with a full skirt got sexy with strategically placed cut-outs on top.
An LBD proved eccentric with cut-out flowers weaving their way across the body. One of our favorite looks, a plum leather shell with tailored burgundy trousers created a refined, ladylike look, but a black fur stole and vampy platforms added edgy sex appeal. The overall balance of sexy/vamp + feminine/flirty had us dying for more.

Whitney Port may have finally proven that she can be taken seriously as a designer, after she presented a collection that felt both vintage and fresh simultaneously. With quintessentially feminine cocktail dresses and heavily embellished shorts (love!), Whitney Eve amped up evening wear in a vibe that felt refreshed and perhaps slightly Cali. The shattered, kaleidoscopic prints and luxe velvet fabric felt unusually classic in jewel tones, a rare treasure to behold, when done well. Whereas the peplum blouses, textured cardigans, and laid back suiting are sure to become the go-to work wear for the young, modern girl, Port’s signature layering pieces were present, with the mix up of eclecticism and whimsical femininity that caught our attention. A keen eye like Whitney Port’s may be exactly what today’s girl-on-the-go needs for Fall 2012.

It was a journey-with Iris Apfel, the program notes read, which inspired Ms. Mastroianni to think about what the fashion lover might wear around the world. NYC to Paris, and onto Asia, the collection featured ornate gowns, organza and chenille fabrics, and intricate, artisan execution of the detailing such as hand-embroidery and shirred organza.
Despite the occurrence and curious turn of events surrounding Zelda Kaplan at the show, the season’s collection should be the focal point, as it was indeed a glorious, triumphant moment in evening wear this season, putting a smile on Ms. Apfel’s face as she walked the runway with Ms. Mastroianni at the end, something that I’m sure Ms. Kaplan would want to be the focus.
