With all of the fashion icons at New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2012, Barbie truly sparkled…in pink. After admiring coveted new looks on the runways, we ended the night perfectly by revisiting our youthful pasts with an all-time favorite doll, Barbie. At Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium, the unveiling of this celebrated fashion closet took us through decades past.
Attendees were given the opportunity to play with fashion behind bright pink doors. Virtual computer screens enabled everyone to doll-ify their own look by stepping into the closet and virtually changing your clothes. Meanwhile, models posted within the dream house transformed to the Original Barbie Doll (remember that black and white striped swimsuit!?) of 1959, the Black Barbie Doll of 1980, the Barbie and the Rockers Doll of 1986, the CEO Barbie Doll of 1985, the 50th Anniversary Doll of 2009 and the Barbie Fashionistas Cutie Doll of 2010. I almost forgot to mention the boundless wall of 360 pairs of pink stilettos!
Albright’s Fashion Library loaned all of the fabulous “real life” Barbie ensembles. For example: The 1980 Black Barbie donned an Alexander McQueen jewel-collared red wrap jersey dress. Barbie Fashionistas Cutie rocked a CD Greene pink crystal cube halter dress and Alexis Bittar pink lucite bangles.

The Barbie Dream Closet Global Brand and Campaign is new and interactive. Visit Barbiewow.com to revel in the imaginative fun. The Dream Closet pop-up is open only through the weekend, from 9am to 10pm.

Brandon Sun made his New York Fashion Week debut with a collection that could easily establish him as one of the new authorities on designing luxury fur accessories. The show, entitled “Silent Assassins,” was inspired by the heroines in the Kung Fu movies that Sun grew up watching. The looks in Sun’s presentation were outfitted in cashmere sweaters and cardigans in shades of black, ivory, grey and dusk-rose that were paired with furs that ranged from fox, raccoon, lamb, chinchilla, mohair, and sable, all layered over chiffon skirts or gabardine pants.
The garments created an image of femininity and strength with the use of furs juxtaposed with soft fabrics and further contrasted with metal, armor-like accessories that helped Sun achieve his goal of designing clothes for a fearless and free woman. With this autumn collection, the modern woman will feel ready to combat the cold in the city dressed in Sun’s sumptuous furs.

For spring, Lepore was all about brights with brights, pairing a citron crop top with a tangerine skirt and a lilac colored net over a tangerine dress. A deep-sea blue complemented well with the bright colors, as a windbreaker was paired with a pink and blue floral swimsuit. It was hard to take our eyes off the runway, as the colors popped with a life of their own and the silhouettes were charming as much as they were downright fun. Tailored tops were coupled with full skirts and bright nets were placed over fitted dresses to add depth and flow as models strutted. Now, take to the streets as if it were your personal runway and put on some color ala Nanette Lepore!

Inspired by the urban wanderer with a sophisticated grunge feel, designersLaurence Chandler and Joshua Cooper explored just that during their Rochambeau Spring 2012 presentation. A short fashion film, titled “Paralymbic,” by Hugh Lippe was shown during the presentation, which complemented the edgy dark colors and leather pieces in the menswear collection. Shirtless models wore open vests with loose fitting pants in various lengths. The cool, laid back Rochambeau man mixes cool relaxation, and sexy at the same time.

Inspired by Phillip Lim’s raincoat in his 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2012 collection, CND’s Angi Wingle designed and mixed a special color just for the designer, mimicking the see-through jackets from the runway. Lim wanted a color to emulate those on the nail bed, which CND then custom blended a new mixture that will enhance the color that is naturally there. CND mixed a few drops of Raspberry Parfait and Guava, which resembled the raincoat in the collection, with a Speedy Top Coat to create a semi sheer coverage that matches the models’ nail beds. CND’s Speedy Top Coat and other colors can be found on their website and at various retailers around the country.
For makeup, NARS National Makeup Artist, Francelle, created a metallic eye in a gray-ish blue with pink lips for Lim’s runway show. Edgy, but soft, Francelle was inspired by the evolution of working with geometry and athlethism of Lim’s collection, concentrating on the freedom and fragility of kites. The inner rebel look of a matte blush on the models’ lips was romanticized with six coats of mascara on their eyes. All the products used can be found at narscosmetics.com:
