Patterns and prints can feel so timeless, while also feeling fresh at the same time. Each season new interpretations of the hottest prints are showcased on the runway. Following are the most on-trend, favorite prints for Fall 2011 that we can’t wait to wear!

1. Plaid – The classic school uniform print has gone from good girl to edgy. Plaid can be oh-so chic on and off the runway. Seen on scarves, bags, pants, ponchos and more, this pattern is always appropriate for fall weather.

2. Polka Dot – A “spot-on” trend right now, polka dots are DEFINITELY making a fashion-forward statement. Marc Jacobs set the tone with his head to toe dotted looks, however for a more realistic approach try micro dot polka dot tights, a sheer polka dot blouse, or even a blazer. This retro-inspired look has proven to be modern one whether done in bright colors or more neutral tones.

3. Animal: Snakeskin- Take a walk on the wild side with an animal print as exotic snakeskin was all over the runways! If you’re feeling really daring, try a snakeskin in a bright hue! We prefer faux, and think overall the style and sheen can be oh so SSS-sexy.

4. Tweed – I can’t fathom Chanel without its signature tweeds, however, this classic look does not have to be all business all of the time. The glory of tweed is in its wearability, lasting you for years to come! Be it blazers, skirts, sweaters, clutches, or shoes, tweed is a smart choice because of its permanent high-fashion appeal.

5. Watercolor -Fall 2011 has a lot to do with the bright, the bold, and the beautiful when it comes to washes of color. Be on the lookout for watercolor inspired floral prints, photo prints, geometric prints, and vintage paisleys on blouses, pants, accessories, and more. Channel your inner artist be creating your own color story via mixing and matching!

The F/W 2011 Marc by Marc Jacobs collection was an intriguing and insightful blend of “1970’s gone 1940’s”. The collection was both trendy and glamorous, as the collection offered up a dash of old Hollywood glamour;  there was an array of chevron-patterned luxe fabrications, a corduroy suits, and higher wasit lines to boot.  Heels were given the pairing of ankle socks,  and the ’70s once again surfaced for Jacobs with pieces such as prominent, flowing jumpsuits.  Marc Jacobs outdid himself again, proving that Marc by Marc Jacobs is not only a diffusion line, but a steady, lifestyle offering.

This has got to be one of the sweetest handbags I’ve seen recently from Marc by Marc Jacobs. The Petal to the Metal leather satchel ($200 at Net-a-Porter) comes in a shade of tobacco called ‘newsprint’, yet it’s style shouts indulgent cupcake from Magnolia Bakery. Overall this is a charming bag because of its compact size. Clearly it is an example of the affordable whimsy and wit so clearly defined and redefined again each season at Marc by Marc Jacobs.

The Petal to the Metal leather satchel is a pint sized messenger bag adorned with a small bird on its front flap. The front flap is accentuated with a zipper detailing around the edge, although not functional it adds an interesting texture and outlines the shape of the bag. Inside is a pouch compartment lined in an ’80s inspired geometric twill print. The closure is secured by a magnet on the outside and a small non-functional strap loops under the gold-toned dove. I am not sure why the purely aesthetic strap does not cross over the entire bag, it does dilute the look of the design a bit.  The dove has is embossed with a tiny circle so small you’ll need a magnifying glass to read the Marc by Marc Jacobs logo. The long strap and makes this messenger bag perfect for carrying only your most basic essentials. Overall I do like the look of this bag and it would make a perfect bag for a post-holiday trip abroad or a charming gift for aspiring fashionista teen. This whimsical bag is also the ideal accessory for adding a bit of eclectic fun to your casual weekend look. Gray is the go to color for the minimalist look this fall. Gray is a neutral that will give you maximum impact when detailed with pleats, draping, gathering and other sculptural elements. We love all of the options for gray dressing this fall. Minimalist sculptural gray dresses and coats work well with the black leggings, tights and super skinny jeans you already own. Black works well, but you can also get daring by partnering gray with primaries such as red, royal blue and yellow. Or go with a monochromatic look with various shades of gray. One of our editors’ favorites is the Marc Jacobs sweatshirt dress. This dress totally reminds us of the Norma Kamali huge shoulder padded dresses of the ’80s! The RM by Roland Mouret coat is a classic that you can wear for many seasons. Mouret is a true artist when it comes to draping and minimalist statement dressing. The coat reminds me of my warmest winter Hussein Chalayan coat from my favorite store, Workshop, in San Francisco. Go ahead and go neutral this fall and stock up on this wardrobe staple.
