For his latest G-Star Raw collection, Pierre Morisset designed an array of utilitarian pieces built to brave whatever elements next winter may throw at us. For men, flotation device-like vests were used to accessorize the ensembles of blazers, baggy trousers, leather gloves, and argyle print shoes. Jeans boasted built-in knee pads while military-inspired wool coats got elbow pads. There were loose-fitting onesies that looked like they’d be perfect for a trip to the tundra. Highlights from the women’s line included denim overalls with a wide leg and navy blue leather trim, a voluminous quilted floor-length skirt, and a pair of revealing booty shorts that made Rosario Dawson’s mouth drop from her front row perch.

You may, like I had, associate G-Star Raw with strictly  jeans and denim, but after the  Spring/Summer 2010 show I realize I was very very wrong! When the first model appeared wearing white bikini shorts and an extremely structured blazer with a plunging neckline, I knew this was going to be much more than just your good old deep denim finds. G-Star Raw brought a full range of looks for both men and women this season, with pieces casual enough for everday use and dressy enough to go out on the town. For the women, casual was a refreshing exaggeration on the boyfriend jean that bagged up top and tapered into an intense skinny jean,  when paired with 4 inch heels, would make any guy want to be your boyfriend. The other looks that were more sophisticated included a white trench coat trimmed with blue detailing and a little black dress embedded with metal studs. G-Star didn’t forget the men, who were styled in pants ranging from bleached skinny jeans  to fitted white dress pants and blazers. And coming from a person who swears against all things denim, I feel tempted to go out and find some G-Star jeans…now that’s a good show!

What if working in fashion was always as frenetic as fashion week? I would have to say “no thanks” in that case!

Marc by Marc Jacobs:

Not surpsigingly it was an 80s-inspired collection, complete with oversized hipster eyeglasses, Buster Brown hats, colorful scarves, and great bags.

ChoCheng:

Colorful riding coats and pastel satin gowns strongly pervaded Cho Cheng’s debut at fashion week.

MaxAzria:

Darker than the BCBG collection, the signature line featured sculptural jackets, deconstructed tunics, leather and metallics that stated it’s time to think about the future of fashion.

Domenico Vacca:

Very Italian suits, sexy cuts, and visible applique lent its way to making a strong showing in the tents; fashion Italian style still rules!

Rodarte:

True to form, the Rodarte sisters expiremented with a mixture of inspirations, resulting in a distinctive, hand-crafted, yet couture aesthetic.

G Star:

Leathers, buckles, and creamy shades of grey invaded the G Star runway at Hammerstein ballroom; we only wish those drop-crotch pants weren’t so drop crotch — I have a feeling they would make me look even shorter than I already am!

Tibi:

Prints to covet, in silhouettes to love seemed to be Amy Smilovic’s moto for the fall 2009 collection.

Narciso Rodriquez:

A bit sombre, however signature Narciso sleekness prevailed; no wonder the First Lady prefers his collection! Loved the peachy pink dresses; definitely the highlight of the collection (let’s try not to think about the weird head gear, shall we?)
