The New York Fashion Team’s Fall 2012 Top Trends
We’ve seen a ton of shows for fall 2012, and decided to share a couple of our favorite trends that are sure to be big come fall 2012:

Gradient Hues
Color blocking hasn’t gone away, but a new color scheme has been creeping it’s way back into popularity through the fashion cycle — gradient colors! BCBG Max Azria certainly worked sun drenched, ochre hues and made them feel fresh by the dalliance of sheer fabrications, while Chadwick Bell piled on the ruffled layers for his salmon-hued version. The combination got a ladylike take at Vivienne Tam with prim and proper pencil skirts and jackets, while Emerson designer Jackie Fraser-Swan let it drip down into a patterned, charcoal-tinged coat. Try out the trend by investing one piece, like a jacket or skirt to pair with basics, or try out an accessory, like a necklace or handbag that gives off a dip-dyed effect.

Embellishment
The Fall 2012 runways blazed embellishment with everything from fringe to embroidery to beads to sequins, and it is a trend we all can incorporate into our wardrobe. For a look that will turn heads, take a cue from J. Mendel and Custo Barcelona with head-to-toe beading and studs. Both ensembles tell a story of experimental spontaneity, fusing classic and contemporary to create a look that is all their own. Or, pull inspiration from Hervé Leger and Tracy Reese. Both designers beautified their collections by adding intricate detail. Whether fringe to create flair or sequins to invoke strength, the self-determination of embellishment makes it quite sublime.

Fall 2012 Fashion Week: Tracy Reese, Custo Barcelona

Tracy Reese
Color for fall is a seemingly common theme on the runways, but Tracy Reese‘s take was certainly her own as she continued doing what she loves: bold color (juicy reds and yellows) and adventurous prints. Those short sleeve cocktail dresses oozed metallic superiority. Meanwhile, the peplum jackets with skinny trousers communicated a more sophisticated, feminine, sweet sensation. Silk blouses, cowl neck sweaters, graphic embellishments, and fur collars often stood out.

Custo Barcelona
Talk about zeal for fashion, texture, and color! Custo Barcelona‘s Fall 2012 Runway show aimed to give “homage to the pioneers of creativity.” The show was full of fervor, a whirlwind of color, fringe, sparkles and volumes. Jackets were a sure highlight of the collection with electrifying metallic applications and technically finished fabrics. Cocoon shapes were our personal favorite, but there were also strong versions of uniformed length. There was something native in the raw cuts of the collection, or perhaps the symbolic color representations: white for purity, red for love, green for nature, brown for earth, and black for unity. The overall expression was the love child of art and culture.

Not so subtle: Custo Barcelona F/W 2010

For Custo Barcelona, fall is not a season for grey knits, hibernating in your heated apartment or hidden with heavy, monochrome layers. That is not to say that the Spanish designer made a collection for the tropics, but amidst the exotic, jungle prints were also the animals – and by that I mean (faux) ur. Only for Custo, even fur does not come in the usual dark tones; instead, he unleashed models clad in neon-colored imitation fur, sometimes in a fancy print, sometimes even-patterned to mimic the fur of wild beasts. Yes, brightly colored fur with brightly colored prints, but there is even more to catch your eye: the bling! A jacket entirely covered in silver sequins saw flashlights adding to the glitz and glitter. Towards the end of the show, the flamboyance might have become a little repetitive, but all in all, this is definitely a fun collection for anyone who wants to step onto center stage.
