Small changes, be it physical or psychological are always a traditional, yet fantastic way to kick off a new year, and for 2017, I am actively doing both. From increasing physical exercise to more “me” time and mindfulness practices, I feel that I’m getting to a better place already, so why not bring my hair along with me? Courtesy of Clairol, I spent some time with the talented James Corbett, the brand’s Color Director, who envisioned a brighter hair future for me, and naturally, always up for a bit of a change, I agreed with the exciting new direction.
Using the Natural Instincts in Spiced Tea, James instantly brought a deeper, brighter, warmer tone to my tresses, which after this initial coloring session, I can easily maintain on my own. If you’d like to do the same, try the augmented reality hair color MyShade application, a first-of-its-kind app in which users can scan any permanent at-home hair color item to virtually try it on their own tresses and match it to the closet Clairol shade. It’s an easy, custom way to get a great match without spending salon prices. Download the app for iOS here or Google Play here.

I’m so fired up for the summer, but need to remember to treat my tresses right. When you dye your hair, sun exposure can certainly cause it to fade, and if you are anything like me (lazy when it comes to root touch-ups), you’ll want to do your best to maintain your color at its status quo. Alternatively, if you don’t have colored hair, you can still utilize these tips to play with a bit of color, or overall hydrate and maintain ultimate hair health.
Switch up your color with a semi or demi-permanent shade
My lovely colorist James Corbett softened my red for the summer by migrating it from a more vibrant shade of Natural Instincts 16 Light Auburn to the lighter Golden Sienna. The transition was pretty seamless, since I already had a base of red in my hair, and you never want to go more than a couple of shades than your current locks for the best effects. Using non-permanent dye solutions also are less harsh on your hair’s composition than regular dyes and allow for a bit of a color boost without an over the top commitment.
