I’ve always had a thing for vintage, especially designer vintage, and Chanel, so I’m super excited about the upcoming sale on Rue La La!

Rue La La Goes Designer Vintage This Thursday with Madison Avenue Couturebags, jewelry and accessories. This is the first time a vintage series is running on a private sale website, which will start this Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. ET.  The boutique will run for 48 hours, where members can enjoy prices up to 70% off retail.

Chanel

Chanel S/S 2010 was, hands down, my favorite collection of the season. It managed to be fun yet sophisticated and was showcased amidst farm scenery, though the clothes were not overshadowed by the uniqueness of the down on the farm set. The show had a very “Marie Antoinette” feel to it:  a charming and romanticized take on rustic country life full of sweet and delicate dresses paired with a pale color palette of black, red, and blue accents. Though the collection was nothing truly groundbreaking, it stayed true to Chanel’s aesthetic and played up its own trends instead of giving us yet another take on trends we have seen over and over again this season.

Hermès

Tennis was the theme at Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring 2010 Hermès collection. I wasn’t too keen on the idea upon hearing the pitch for the line, but as soon as I saw the clothes — and, of course, the impeccable bags — I quickly changed my mind. Gaultier delivered a sophisticated, timeless collection for Hermès that is on-trend without veering too far overboard nor disposable once the next season rolls around. Each piece was beautiful, wearable, and effortless, from the tennis skirts to the silver chain-linked belts.

Alexander McQueen

Appropriately titled “Plato’s Atlantis,” Alexander McQueen’s Spring 2010 RTW collection was out of this world and was truly one of my favorite shows of the season. Inspired by mankind’s evolution from the sea and the idea that we may someday return, the dramatic collection featured 10-inch heels, belle-skirt silhouettes, braided asymmetrical hairstyles, aquatic colors, and intricate, digitally printed dresses. Evolution is still stuck in McQueens head, and ours, from the Darwinian-inspired collection that featured large to small taxidermied animals framing the runway.  With this collection, McQueen proved he still knows how to put on a show — the hair, makeup, clothing volume (not to mention the shoes!), and overall primitive/futuristic aesthetic were combined in a slightly unsettling, almost scary, way — and the outcome was a brilliantly creative work of art.

A progression of structure and color swept through the Chanel Fall couture runway for the Fall 2009 Couture collection. Beginning on a classic note, Karl Lagerfield sent tailored skirt suits hushed in grey, brown, and navy hues to set the simple opulence synonymous with the Chanel brand. The dress and coat ensembles may have been stream-lined but jeweled embellishments and graphic patterns brought a fresh breath to the classic looks. The lace tights and colorful oxford shoe pairings also brought a delicate, dark asymmetry to the twist on the menswear fabrications. But as the show progressed, skirt suits morphed into ethereal tulle evening gowns, and the smoky colors intensified to a spectrum of jeweled purples, reds and blues. The silhouettes also became more daring with dramatic “tails” skimming the ground behind mid-thigh sequenced dresses and patterns exploded in firework designs and bursting floral jewels to bring the intensity to a heightened severity.

The Chanel couture show was a detour from Lagerfeld’s recent past shows that were more engrossed in lighter, natural glamour but a movement towards a darker, more mysterious ambiance made the show all the more striking. Inspiration? Perhaps the mysterious Madame Coco Chanel herself, as she is the subject of two films soon to be released.

Nautical isn’t going anywhere; Karl Lagerfeld confirms this notion via his heavy sea/sailor themed resort 2010 collection shown on Venice’s Lido (a sandbar island close to Venice that stretches about six miles).

Dubbed “Coco on the Lido,” and inspired by Coco Chanel’s time spent in Venice,  pirates hats, capes, literal sailor’s costumes and beachwear in a bevy of solids and stripes appeared on the wooden boardwalk. As always with Chanel, it is a challenge to narrow down the collection to one favorite look, but if I must, I choose this vintage-inspired sailor dress that hits on the theme, as well as several Chanel signature items. Note the double-wristed bangles, cap toe flats, and belted high waist. Plus, as fun as the 30s wigs were on the other models, I prefer a more realistic take on resort, as seen on this wispy-haired model.

It’s really incredible to see how classics can be reworked and reworked and reworked at Chanel. I really have to hand it to Karl Lagerfeld; he has done for Chanel what any storied fashion house would want — been able to attract  new generations of customers. I absolutely love this cream heavily layered sweaterdress, but equeally so, the handbag & must-have enclosure bag is simply pure genius. It’s such a fun concept playing off on the idea how the Chanel quilted bag is an essentail every lady must have. I would be curious to see if any of these pop up come next fashion week – I sure hope so!

From Russia (and Paris), with Love — Karl Lagerfeld readily admits his Russian inspirations for this pre-fall collection: the Ballets Russes, Constructivism, Byzantine jewelry, and Slavic folklore. Aptly named “Paris-Moscou”, the collection was full of red, over-the-top furs and embellishments, leather leggings, and fringe. I absolutely was fascinated by the amazing headresses and thrilled with the revival of muffs.
Although it was nearly impossible to pick one look as my favorite, I ended up going with the show-closer, this amazing dress and head piece that succinctly melded several different trends of the collection into one. I loved the way the scalloped layers of the bodice appeared to be breaking away from the ombre portion of the dress.
