Shopping for Holiday 2016: Classic Gifts with a Twist

by Julia DiNardo

Classic gifts maintain their luster for several reasons, with attributes such as being across-the-board crowd pleasers, providing instant gratification, and are relatively easy to buy and gift. As much as I feel I don’t gravitate toward traditional things, receiving two classic gifts such as jewelry or flowers will 100% make my day. This year, I wanted to share gift guides with products that serve as unique, thoughtful, and memorable, and below have included a select number of companies that fulfill just that this holiday season.

When it comes to flowers, try:

The Bouqs: Has an easy-to-order app platform and website, and delivers across the US with a wide swatch of unique flower selections, sourced from eco-friendly farms domestically and abroad, affordably priced (bouquets start at $40), with an all-inclusive price that includes shipping, tax, etc. Continue the gifting throughout the year with the company’s subscription service.

What I Wore: NYFW Look 3; There’s Only Room for One & Here She Comes

by Julia DiNardo

P1110344

The subject of this post is a line from David Bowie’s “Suffragette City,”  which, I don’t recall hearing at New York Fashion Week, but did take in a lot of other Bowie tunes. The runway was rife with homages to the incredibly talented artist, in both music and design, both mourning and celebrating his most recognized hits and iconic looks. As a Bowie fan myself, I appreciated the reminder of how great he was in making people happy, making people feel something, doing something not done before, along with creating something that happened to easily stand the test of time.  And in thinking about it in the framing of New York Fashion Week, isn’t that what good design should also evoke in us?

Fashion week, from one season to another tends to be a big blur for me, as one solid mass of sameness, with a few gems that stand out in my memory and emotional reaction.  I strive to create a personal style look for myself that feels original and not dated, and am hopeful to maintain a feeling about fashion that constantly reminds me of why I work so hard to be a part of it.  I can’t help but defer to these all stars of the industry, aka the designers that show as fashion week, for inspiration, and I know it has to be a challenge to create greatness time after time (shoot, even Bowie wrote some flops), but I think as customers we’ve come to settle for mediocrity in design and quality.

Remember that you vote with your dollar, so cast that vote into a sartorial candidate that you believe in (sorry- can’t help but seep in a political analogy in this election year). Eventually, it can’t help but begin to shift the landscape of  fashion into a direction that you’d like to see more and more of in the near future.  The pieces that I’m wearing in this look, for me, embody that ideal, at least in this place and time. I could also be going to work, at a wedding, or to a fashion show today, or in the year 2020, and isn’t that an ultimate win when it comes to clothes and accessories?

Classic Pieces Take the Lead

by Julia DiNardo

juliadinardo2015

It seems that from this point until about mid-March, you may not see my personal style without a jacket and/or cold weather accessory in the shot, with a sprinkling of precipitation for extra measure! Lots of warm, wool layers are a must, with thick, nubby socks crammed into boots and as many long sleeves as I can wear without looking too bulky on top. My best friend got me this sweater for Christmas, and it is just absolutely perfect in every way; I’m one of the most difficult people to shop for, and she pretty much nails it every time! She anticipated that I would fancy it up with accessories, so Jamie, this one’s for you!

I’m feeling like dressing a bit more paired down for 2015, revisiting some classic silhouettes anew, like this 8-lace Dr. Martens and a vintage (from 1992) Louis Vuitton Epi Noe Bowler Bag, which came into popularity right around the time the aforementioned “Docs” were on the rise — could two styles ever be so different? In the 1990s, pairing these together wouldn’t have worked, but today, the mixing of styles, decades, and high and low brans is au curant as it will ever be. My jacket harks back to another time as well, 2002, and can’t believe I’ve had it with me through all of my apartment moves and style changes; classic pieces have the potential to take the style lead and see you through life’s changes.
