This most recent New York Fashion Week came with newly revived trends from the 80’s and early 90’s, complete with accentuated shoulders, off-the-shoulder tops, voluminous silhouettes, and plenty of ruffles. A standout trend from this category though, was the classic power suit, revamped. With the rise of androgyny on the runway over the past few years, this is not a surprising direction for brands to embark upon. Designers like Calvin Klein, Vivienne Tam, and Jason Wu all showed versions of the menswear-inspired suit look, each with its own unique styling.
Amy Smilovic of Tibi included pinstripe blazers in an extra-oversized fit, while more classically tailored pieces in monochromatic styling appeared on the runway at The Row. At Nicole Miller, edgy, grunge inspired suiting was featured in the collection, complimented by graphic embroidery and dark, smudged eye makeup.

There are have a bevy of designer collaborations as of late, making it the norm, rather than the exception, for a big box retailer to team up with a talented designer on a lower priced line. The quality and styles have waxed and waned, and I haven’t found too many pieces on my ‘must-haves’ list, although every now and then a special piece catches my eye. With 3.1 Phillip Lim for Target, which launches September 15th in Target stores and on Target.com, the designer provides close iterations of his coveted handbags, alongside practical apparel for women and men. The 100 items in the unit will be priced from $19.99 to $299.99 for apparel, and $19.99 to $59.99 for accessories. Men can get in on the action with stylish knapsacks and footwear, and even a leather moto jacket.
I was lucky to attend the press preview for the line, and snapped some photos of my favorite pieces, so that you can see, as first-hand as possible, before the collection is available, what the pieces REALLY look like, alongside my top pics. I think there are some surprise hits in the line, like the two-toned pique tee for men and lingerie separates for women that will do quite well, and of course, the handbags are going to be the first to go! See the slideshow above for my top picks; which piece will you buy?

Inspired by Phillip Lim’s raincoat in his 3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2012 collection, CND’s Angi Wingle designed and mixed a special color just for the designer, mimicking the see-through jackets from the runway. Lim wanted a color to emulate those on the nail bed, which CND then custom blended a new mixture that will enhance the color that is naturally there. CND mixed a few drops of Raspberry Parfait and Guava, which resembled the raincoat in the collection, with a Speedy Top Coat to create a semi sheer coverage that matches the models’ nail beds. CND’s Speedy Top Coat and other colors can be found on their website and at various retailers around the country.
For makeup, NARS National Makeup Artist, Francelle, created a metallic eye in a gray-ish blue with pink lips for Lim’s runway show. Edgy, but soft, Francelle was inspired by the evolution of working with geometry and athlethism of Lim’s collection, concentrating on the freedom and fragility of kites. The inner rebel look of a matte blush on the models’ lips was romanticized with six coats of mascara on their eyes. All the products used can be found at narscosmetics.com:
