After seeing the Jewels by JAR exhibit at The Met and realizing some of the most original, hand-wrought pieces were the brooches, my ESP kicked in and I predict that brooches will make a great comeback as a statement jewelry item. Let’s take for example, this current winter; we’re all decked out in sweaters and coats ALL of the time (unless you are lucky enough to live in a warmer climate), and let’s be honest here; dressing for in climate weather can be downright utilitarian and fashion-less. Adding a sparkly bauble here and there will add such a great statement to your winter look, that you’ll be a believer once the compliments start rolling in.
Like an fashion accessory, the brooch should compliment your current clothing and be reflective in size and color of the overall aesthetic. Smoother, more lightweight fabrications tend to look best, like cashmere and merino wool, or even a bit of plush found in angora, on crewneck sweaters and jackets. Stay away from quilted designs and busy prints, and instead let your brooch pop off of a solid surface. Stay away from “brooching up” other accessories, like hats or scarves, as it can quickly veer into the overboard arena. Think 1950s elegant, sophisticated style, and you’ll never go wrong!
I’m sure you have at least one brooch buried somewhere in your jewelry box from your mom, grandma, or an aunt, and if not, pick up a vintage one on etsy (if it comes with a matching set of earrings, DO NOT wear it all together) or one of your favorite jewelry brands. I love Sorrelli’s offerings, one of which was converted into a hair piece for me for my wedding! Which leads me to….don’t be afraid to do the same thing! If you have one, sad, lone earring whose mate has been lost, convert it into a brooch, or if you don’t want to pin an actual brooch on yourself, find a necklace chain in a similar metal hue and wear it instead as a pendant. I’m telling you, brooches are coming back, and just remember: you heard it here first at Fashion Pulse Daily!
