I had recently begun to notice bold, statement earrings being sold separately, sometimes with a stud for the other ear, and sometimes nothing at all, and have been really into this avant garde, almost forgetful way of styling the lobes. The ear cuff had a big moment recently, and now it looks like it is making way for the oversize, overtly dramatic one-lobe earring that can hold its own all by itself. An entire spread in Vogue‘s July 2014 issue seemed to be dedicated to the look (pictured above), which I feel is easily adoptable by all; you just have to be prepared to field concerned questions from on-lookers who may be trying to inform you that an earring has gone missing.
The key to this look is length followed by volume, so don’t be afraid to let your earrings hover at shoulder height, in the 3+ inch range. Wearing an earring this long and large will do your earring hole justice by completely eclipsing it and distributing the pressure by using a clip-on back instead, which may also open the vault to some wonderful vintage options.

Tassels are nothing new to the jewelry scene, however they’ve recently enjoyed quite an influx of attention lately. From earrings to necklaces, it’s certainly been their time to shine, and we can’t resist a long strand tassel necklace. DIY one or pick one up at at cool boho-inspired shop like Anthropologie or Etsy for a unique take on the trend. Soft fabric tassels look great for the spring/summer season, while metal and leather ones help to transition into the fall/winter season. See above for four of my tassel necklace picks!

Do you remember these from the ’80s? The round canvas version, was all the rage! I recall saving my allowance and buying multiples, some in neon hues, from a variety store while on family vacation in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. There may be an old soft spot in your style memory for these, or a new found one, but either way, they fell just perfect for a very nautical summer of 2014.
Call them a braided rope bracelet or sailor’s knot, but either way you’re going to look beach-worthy and wonderful in one. I like the “old school,” canvas version best, but the design also looks great recreated in beads and gold or silver plating. I found seven that are just perfect, priced from $10-$78, that are sure to look perfectly casual with a beach coverup and elegantly dresses up with a silken maxi dress.
Which one is on your must-have list?

The trend is certainly emerging, if it’s not already here, which involves a selection of earring backs and fronts that combine different shapes, colors, and even materials to be no view from both sides of the lobes. Forget about traditional earring backs, and go for a bit of the trick of the eye with these lovely dangling pieces that encourage creativity with mixing and pairing them with other earrings in your jewelry box.
Some of the styles do sport a traditional earring post, however possess an extra hanging jewelry piece for some added movement, shine, and glamour. Wear these earrings with everything from casual and activewear to more elegant looks with an edge. Above, I’ve rounded up eight styles in a wide range of price points and styles; which one is your favorite?
