Ever the fashion week to expose emerging and innovative designers with an affinity for whimsy, the Copenhagen shows this season delighted the eyes. Though most designers presented their collections in the city hall, music theatre or a luxury hotel, Astrid Andersen broke the mold, inviting the fashion crowd to Fitness World where jacked non-models posed between sets in designer sports wear adorned with lace.

Henrik Vibskov, also notorious for unexpected venues, showed his collection as performance art in a Frederiksberg park, with models walking in circles through free-standing doors in double-lens-ed sunglasses.

Trash Couture rooted its collection in a parody of Black Swan, mixing lace-clad ballerinas in with the models, sashaying down the catwalk en point, while the Tabernacle Twins paid tribute to childhood, sending two models down the runway at a time in braids. Dennis Lyngsø kept spring/summer 2012 coherent, simple-yet-dark at Copenhagen city hall. His collection exuded sexiness without bordering on vulgar, presenting form-fitting knee length and floor length dresses in black and brown with Victorian collars accompanied by teased hair even Albert Einstein would find trendy.

Minimarket stayed true to its successful aesthetic, echoing patterns from last year’s collection, while updating this season’s designs with influences of Cleopatra’s Egypt and 90’s footwear. The crux? Lace and earth tones are back for fall, paired with ethnic accents and a draped silhouette, taut-yet-modest shapes or playful hints of color.
