OMG, this is terrible. I mean, fine, throw them out (at least then, people can go through the trash and find usable items), but slashing them is outrageous and makes me sad. How many underpaid children in sweatshops had to make those items, only for them to be discarded in such a horrific fashion? It's very wasteful, and not at all environmentally conscious. It will definitely make me think twice before shopping at H & M and any store that does this.

It sounds like the dumpster action was a dumb move by the Manager and staff of that one location. At minimum, a donation is a tax write off for the company. I guess some one got too lazy to do the inventory, and thought it easier to trash it and call it a loss, rather than count it. Too bad, and odd, since charity is an easy solution.

Slashing/smashing unsold items is nothing new in retail (you'd be shocked to learn who all does it and how long it has been going on), so I don't feel that H&M should be singled out for our indignation. I, too, believe that stores should donate their unsold goods and we should encourage stores to do so; however, I don't think boycotting a store is the answer.
Very interesting post!
